Welcome to San Jose, CA

San Jose, California, is a city of contrasts. It’s a world where innovation meets tradition, and Silicon Valley’s energy coexists with historic neighborhoods and cultural gems. As the largest city in Northern California and the third-largest in the state, San Jose is the beating heart of the Bay Area. Despite its size and global reputation, many parts of San Jose still have tight-knit communities. From the tech campuses that shape tomorrow to the family-run markets that have stood strong for generations, San Jose is a place where old meets new in the best of ways.

I’ve spent countless days exploring this diverse city, and it continues to surprise and inspire me every time.

PEOPLE & LIFESTYLE

San Jose is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and that diversity is one of its greatest strengths. With over a million residents, the city is made up of dozens of distinct neighborhoods. From the historic charm of Willow Glen and the suburban comfort of Almaden Valley to the urban buzz of Downtown San Jose, there is truly something for everyone. People here come from all walks of life and many corners of the globe, bringing with them languages, traditions, and cuisines that enrich everyday life.

Many residents work in tech, but the lifestyle here is far from one-dimensional. San Jose offers everything from quiet cul-de-sacs to high-rise living, and community events like farmers markets, seasonal festivals, and neighborhood cleanups help make this big city feel personal. With easy access to nature preserves, hiking trails, and a generally sunny climate, it’s easy to enjoy the outdoors here year-round.

DINING, ENTERTAINMENT & SHOPPING

There’s no shortage of flavor in San Jose. Whether you're strolling through the San Pedro Square Market or grabbing a banh mi in Little Saigon, you’re never far from a great meal. The city’s culinary scene reflects its cultural diversity, offering everything from Michelin-recognized restaurants to beloved taco trucks.

Santana Row is one of San Jose’s most popular shopping and dining destinations, blending upscale boutiques with relaxed cafes and nightlife. For more local flavor, neighborhoods like Japantown and Willow Glen offer charming streets lined with independent shops, bakeries, and cafes. I often find myself browsing in these areas, and I rarely leave without a small treat or treasure (for me and my pig, Morton).

Downtown San Jose is also home to the SAP Center, where you can catch a Sharks game or a major concert, and the California Theatre, which hosts performances from the symphony, opera, and more. Whether you're into sports, music, or live theater, there’s never a shortage of things to do in San Jose.

THINGS TO DO

San Jose has something for everyone. History lovers can visit the Winchester Mystery House or the Peralta Adobe, while families enjoy outings to Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. The Children’s Discovery Museum and The Tech Interactive are always fun for kids and curious minds alike.

If you love the outdoors, you’ll appreciate places like Alum Rock Park, Almaden Quicksilver County Park, and the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Each offers hiking, biking, or simply a peaceful place to connect with nature. You can even head up to Mount Umunhum for sweeping views of the South Bay.

The city also hosts many cultural events and festivals throughout the year, from Lunar New Year celebrations to the Cinequest Film Festival. These events bring people together and make the city feel alive with creativity and community spirit.

SCHOOLS

San Jose is home to several highly regarded public school districts, including Cupertino Union, Evergreen, and San Jose Unified. The city also has many excellent private and charter school options. Families are drawn here for the educational opportunities, which include strong programs in STEM, the arts, and language immersion. San José State University, located downtown, adds even more academic and cultural vitality to the area.
