Welcome to Los Altos
Los Altos, California, has evolved from a small, quiet community of flower greenhouses and orchards into one of the most desirable residential areas in Silicon Valley. Nestled between Mountain View and Palo Alto, this charming town of around 30,000 residents offers a perfect blend of suburban tranquility and proximity to the Bay Area’s bustling tech scene. While it has grown since the 1960s, when I moved to the area as a child, the strong sense of community and the natural beauty of its tree-lined streets remain unchanged. Today, Los Altos is known for its excellent schools, beautiful neighborhoods, and vibrant downtown—making it a sought-after place to call home. It’s also the location of my office at 160 Main Street in Downtown Los Altos. If you are ever in the area, stop by and say hello!

People and Lifestyle
Los Altos has grown into an elite Silicon Valley community while maintaining its warm, small-town charm. The city offers a mix of housing options, from luxurious estates to comfortable single-family homes, set against a backdrop of beautiful oak and redwood trees. Many residents are long-time locals, who’ve watched the town evolve, while new residents are drawn to the excellent schools and proximity to Silicon Valley’s tech centers. The community is known for being highly educated and engaged, with many residents involved in local initiatives and city events. Though the orchards may have made way for residential neighborhoods, that connection to the land and history is still felt in Los Altos’ open spaces, like Shoup Park and the historic apricot orchards at the Los Altos History Museum.
Dining, Entertainment and Shopping
Downtown Los Altos has a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, with a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants lining the streets. From cozy bakeries like Red Berry Coffee Bar to fine dining at places like Cetrella, there’s something for every taste. The downtown area hosts farmers markets, seasonal events, and art shows, making it a lively spot for both residents and visitors.
For shopping, the city offers a curated mix of independent boutiques and familiar names, all within walking distance of charming outdoor cafes. This downtown retains the personal touch of a small town while offering modern conveniences, making it a favorite gathering place for locals.
With my office at The Agency Los Altos being perfectly located in the heart of the downtown area, also known as the Los Altos Village, I am very familiar with many of the local spots and would be happy to offer a suggestion!
Things to Do
Los Altos may not have the sprawling tech campuses of nearby cities, but it’s rich in parks, nature, and cultural offerings. The Los Altos History Museum is a community treasure, offering a glimpse into the city’s agricultural past, while Shoup Park provides a beautiful outdoor space for families to enjoy picnics, play areas, and walking trails. Redwood Grove, adjacent to Shoup Park, offers over 6 acres of serene redwood forest just a short walk from downtown. This peaceful oasis lets you escape into nature as you stroll beneath the towering redwoods, making you feel miles away from it all. It’s such a fun and refreshing experience!
The annual Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival is a summer highlight, drawing crowds for its unique blend of art, food, and music. Our office usually sponsors a booth where we pour wine samples to passing guests!
Just a short drive away is the scenic Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, where outdoor enthusiasts can hike, bike, or explore the Deer Hollow Farm. This balance of suburban living with access to the great outdoors is what makes Los Altos such a special place to live.
Schools
Many families are drawn to Los Altos largely because of its highly regarded schools. The Los Altos School District and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District offer top-notch educational opportunities, with schools regularly recognized for their academic excellence. These districts have a strong focus on fostering a supportive and challenging learning environment, with a range of programs designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. Los Altos High School isn’t far from Downtown, so I often find myself sharing lines at my favorite local cafes with the local teens. These kids sure seem to have bigger allowances than we did back in the day!
Why Live in Los Altos?
Los Altos is a community where residents take pride in their surroundings—whether it’s the well-maintained homes, the excellent schools, or the vibrant local businesses. It’s a town that feels deeply connected to its past while being fully engaged in the present. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to settle down, where neighbors know each other, and the natural beauty of Northern California is right outside your door, Los Altos offers a perfect balance of history, community, and convenience. I have had the privilege of working out of Los Altos for much of my career and have enjoyed every minute of it!
